What is a Nurse Practitioner?

N.P.’s are nurses with advanced degrees (either a Master’s or a Doctoral degree) in nursing whose clinical expertise includes diagnosing and treating health conditions with an emphasis on disease prevention and health management. They are able to order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests (including lab work and x-rays); diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions; prescribe medications and other treatments; manage patients’ overall care; and educate patients on disease prevention. Many Americans choose to see N.P.’s as their primary healthcare providers. N.P.’s are required to be board-certified in the state where they practice and must renew their credentials every five years.
